SP on BBC Radio Cambridge 5 November 2003

Cambridge SP Adopters Group Coordinator, Mike Brady, was interviewed on BBC Radio Cambridge prior to the groups policy forum 'Making all trade Fair Trade' (see details in the meetings archive).

For those not familiar with 'fireworks night', mentioned in the interview, this occurs on 5 November every year. Our meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month and so there was an unavoidable clash, but the meeting was arranged to start after the main city firework display.

There are some interesting lessons from this interview for SP campaigners:

  • The media picked up on the story because it was a policy forum on Fair Trade, which is presently a more widely understood concept.

  • The first questions were about Fair Trade and it was necessary to link from this to SP.

  • Details of the policy forum event and where to get further information were included in the broadcast.

It wasn't possible to put across as much information about SP as would have been ideal, but it has given the campaign its first airing in the local broadcast media. It does also show the relevance of SP to existing campaigns and how SP can take these to a level beyond what they presently hope to achieve, in this case moving from supporting Fair Trade to making all trade Fair Trade.
